Tonight is Halloween! And even if you live in a country that doesn't technically celebrate this totally awesome tradition it's no reason not to get in the spirit by drenching yourself in fake blood and finding some like minded people to party with. Here are some zombie pirates to show you how serious I am. Yes, the girl on the right who has been "feeding" (i.e. I had done so much make up for others by that point that I was just lazy) is me.
Anyway, if you think it's to late to make some party treats at this time in the afternoon you're wrong. You still have time to make 'Poisonous" Toffee Apples, they take about 20 minutes and are the best!
4 cups granulated sugar
1½ cups water
1 cup liquid glucose
few drops black gel food colouring (or any other colour you have in your pantry, you can even try mixing your own "black")
12 Granny Smith apples, unwaxed (if waxed, wash and dry them thoroughly)
Grease a piece of baking paper and place on a tray or plate. Nothing plastic.
Insert skewers or lollipop sticks in all the apples and set aside.
In a medium pot, combine the sugar, water, glucose and food colouring. Place over a medium heat.
When the sugar has dissolved, turn the heat up and wash the sides of the pot down with a pastry brush dipped into clean water to prevent crystals from forming.
Allow the caramel to boil until it reaches the hard crack stage (150°c/310°F).
Carefully dip the apples into the hot caramel mixture and place on the baking paper to set and cool for approximately an hour before serving.
